Acupuncture for Hypermobility and EDS
Can acupuncture help hypermobility?
The short answer is yes but there are some considerations.
Now for the longer answer:
First, if you have been recently diagnosed as hyper mobile or with EDS (Ehlers-Danlos syndrome) I’m sorry if you are experiencing pain. Acupuncture can be an important part of your self care but seeing the right acupuncturist is necessary.
Some acupuncturists, like myself, specialize in orthopedics. If you’re in NYC, I have experience treating hyper mobile patients so you’re in the right hands.
If you’re not in NYC, then I advise you to search for an acupuncturist using the following key phrases:
Dry needling
Triggerpoint release
Motor point Acupuncture
Sports Medicine Acupuncture
Neurofunctional acupuncture
All acupuncturists have training to treat pain, but those who have those key phrases in their training are more equipped to treat your pain quickly and successfully.
How does acupuncture help hyper mobility?
Acupuncture can’t correct hyper mobility but releasing tight muscles and activating weak ones can make all the difference in you feeling more stable.
I am hypermobile and know what it feels like to be twisted and how incredibly painful that can be. I also know how releasing trigger points are an integral part of correcting postural issues so that you can strength train peacefully without pain.
Your main goal in being hyper mobile is to strength train and learn to control your range of motion. Hypermobility is a spectrum and while I would leave it up to your hyper mobility specialist to guide you in managing it, I strongly recommend pilates as the main way to manage hypermobilty.
Acupuncture, trigger point release and fascial release can be a part of pain management and self care for anyone who is hyper mobile.
